Welcome to Cattleya Conversation

In my professional life, I am an assistant professor of Postcolonial literature. Now, of course, I am also an enthusiastic grower of Cattleya species orchids.

I have always been fascinated with orchids but never attempted to grow them, but a few months ago, I finally decided to give it a try. My choice of Cattleya species orchids, as my primary focus, was purely by accident: a lucky accident! Without much knowledge about orchids, I decided to purchase a set of five seedlings being offered by an Ebay seller: All these seedlings happened to be Cattleya species orchids. And that is how I decided to be a grower of Cattleya species orchids.

But, in order to keep my orchid collection focused and manageable, I also decided to grow only the seventeen classic Cattleya species discussed by Arthur A. Chadwick and Arthur E. Chadwick in their wonderful book,  The Classic Cattleyas.

Much of what I know about Cattleyas comes from this book and their research has enabled me to keep my plants alive and thriving.

This is a community blog that also serves as s a catalog of my collection, my failures, mistakes, and occasional successes with seventeen species of classic Cattleyas and (I could not resist) two extra species added to that. I will provide more details in various blog entries, and will also add more resources to this site. Meanwhile, please feel free to contact me or  register to join the conversation.

Orchid seeds are very transparent and very small, tiny specs, at times barely visible to the human [...]

Cattleya Divisions and Backbulbs

Since I started my collection, I have also been, when possible, dividing my plants. By now I have quite a nice collection of divisions and backbulbs. I have added this information as a subpage under my “My Collection” page but thought to post it as a blog entry as well. If all goes well, I [...]

Notes About My Trusted Ebay Orchid Sellers

Since I do not have access to an established orchid nursery or orchid store where I live, I have mostly relied on Ebay sellers to build my collection. You will be surprised to know that Ebay has a large number of orchid sellers, some of whom are avid orchid growers and/ or own and operate [...]

My C. warscewizii Quest

Of all the classic Cattleya species that I had set out to collect and grow, the quest for C. warscewizii turned out be the most interesting and also the most fortuitous. At first I could not find even a single plant on Ebay, and for one plant listed a few months ago the bids quickly [...]
