As I wrote in another blog entry, my decision to grow Cattleya species orchids was purely accidental. But my quest to collect and grow specific Cattleya species is guided by Arthur A. Chadwick and Arthur E. Chadwick’s book entitled The Classic Cattleyas, in which they describe the seventeen original large-flowered Cattleya species. No doubt this is a wonderful book, but using the book also has a pragmatic value: It allows me to focus my collection while also aiding me in growing the plants that actually started it all. The list includes the following species:

  1. C. dowiana
  2. C. eldorado
  3. C. gaskelliana
  4. C. jenmanii
  5. C. lawrenceana
  6. C. lueddemanniana
  7. C. labiata
  8. C. maxima
  9. C. mendelii
  10. C. mossiae
  11. C. percivaliana
  12. C. quadricolor
  13. C. rex
  14. C. schroederae
  15. C. trianae
  16. C. warneri
  17. C. warscewiczii

Besides these species, I have also added two other Cattleya species to my list: C. skinneri and C. intermedia. So far, I have been able to collect at least one each of all these species, and I am now in the second stage: getting them established and getting them to bloom.

For more details please visit my “My Collection” page. I will soon share my experiences of growing each one of these species orchids.
